Our Data

Food Hygiene Rating uses publicly available food hygiene information to help you find and compare the hygiene ratings of food businesses across the UK.

Where Does Our Data Come From?

The information displayed on Food Hygiene Rating is sourced from data published by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) through its Food Hygiene Rating Scheme API.

This includes information about food establishments such as their name, address, business type, hygiene rating and the date of their most recent inspection or assessment, where this information is available.

The underlying information is collected and maintained by the relevant local authorities and published through the Food Standards Agency.

Food Hygiene Rating does not carry out food hygiene inspections or determine the ratings displayed on this website.

Food Hygiene Rating Schemes

Food hygiene schemes differ across the UK.

In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, businesses are generally covered by the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme (FHRS), under which businesses may receive a hygiene rating from 0 to 5.

Scotland operates the Food Hygiene Information Scheme (FHIS), which uses different rating classifications.

Where applicable, we display the rating information provided within the official data.

How Often Is Our Data Updated?

We periodically retrieve updated information from the Food Standards Agency's publicly available data.

There may be a delay between a business being inspected, its official record being updated and that change appearing on Food Hygiene Rating.

For this reason, the information displayed on this website should not be considered real-time.

Accuracy and Limitations

We aim to present the information supplied through the official data accurately. However, we cannot guarantee that every record displayed on Food Hygiene Rating is complete, current or error-free.

For example:

  • a business may have closed, moved or changed ownership;
  • an establishment may have been inspected again since the information was last retrieved;
  • addresses, business names or other details may have changed;
  • there may be delays in updates being provided by local authorities or appearing in the published data; and
  • occasional errors or omissions may exist within either the source data or our processing of it.

The absence of a business from Food Hygiene Rating does not necessarily mean that the business is unregistered, has not been inspected or does not have an official hygiene record.

Always Check the Official Record

Food Hygiene Rating is designed to make public food hygiene information easier to find and explore, but it is not an official government service.

If you need to verify a food hygiene rating or require the most current information available, you should check the official Food Standards Agency food hygiene rating service or contact the relevant local authority.

Reporting Incorrect Information

If you believe information displayed on Food Hygiene Rating is incorrect, please bear in mind that we reproduce information derived from official public data and cannot change a food business's official hygiene rating.

Where the underlying official record is incorrect, you should contact the relevant local authority or the Food Standards Agency.

If the official information is correct but you believe we are displaying or processing it incorrectly, please contact us so that we can investigate.
